Sports and Community Building
Creating Community
Building community is fundamental in order to have a fulfilling life and foster good surroundings for your kids and the rest of your family. Although there are many ways to build community, organized sports across all ages is a great way for parents and kids to start creating important and meaningful connections. Whatever sport it may be, there are several good ways to start taking positive steps in your community.
Team Volunteering
Whether it be for school or club sports, there are always many opportunities to volunteer in the local community. By talking with coaches or working with other parents, it becomes very easy to get the team together to make an impact. Young athletes are full of energy and some of their best friends are their teammates. Getting together over the weekend or after a practice would benefit team bonding as well as character building for everyone involved. Not only does volunteering have benefits for team chemistry, but the community will recognize the work put in. By representing their club or their school, different communities will come together and help each other out.
Using Sports to Expand your Circle
Although each kid plays the same sport and represents the same team, there are a plethora of different identities and backgrounds. Families come from all over the place and have different careers and life paths. Making the effort to get to know the families of who your kid is playing with opens doors to another world. Surprisingly enough, the same way friendships between athletes are built, friendships between parents can grow strong too. It isn't enough to just show up to practice, games, and tournaments. Instead, get out there with your kid and the rest of your family in order to build a strong hub around your team. Whether that is hosting a barbecue or organizing a team event, it is important to realize that being a part of a team can be much more than your kid just playing the sport that they love.
Local Tournaments
Overtime, sports teams and sports organizations grow large and span from different age ranges and backgrounds. Being a part of one of these teams is a community in and of itself. When a club or a school hosts events, such as a tournament, the community comes together. Family and friends have a greater chance of coming out, local businesses get the chance to grow (food trucks, merchandise, venues, etc…), and those who live nearby are able to experience and be a part of something that they otherwise would not have been involved with. Something as simple as a local tournament is proof that sports have the powerful capability to build community in a positive light.
Get Out There!
Overall, being a part of something such as sports allows you to connect with people for the rest of your life. It can be difficult at times to go the extra mile in growing your personal circle and helping out in the community, but change and life long friends can be made. There are many other ways to build community and friendships, but getting more involved with your kid and their sport is one way to grow.
