Healthy Halloween Snacks for Young Athletes

Overview

Halloween is right around the corner and with that comes a lot of fun treats, that might not be the best to fuel young athletes, to be able to perform their best. A snack that provides the needed energy to fuel a young athlete should include a complex carbohydrate, fat, fiber, and protein. So, here are 4 simple Halloween inspired snacks to fuel young athletes!

Pretzel Cheese Stick Witch Brooms

 
Ingredients
  • Cheese Sticks
  • Pretzel Sticks (normal or gluten free)
  • Fresh chives (optional)
 
Directions
  1. Cut cheese sticks into thirds
  1. Peel the bottom of the cheese stick so it looks like the end of a witch’s broom
  1. place pretzel stick in the top of the cheese stick (not on end that was peeled)
  1. (optional) Tie a chive around the broom
 

Peanut Butter Apple With Monster Teeth

 
Ingredients
  • Green apples
  • Peanut Butter (or sunflower seed butter)
  • Sunflower seeds
 
Directions
  1. Slice the apples into wedges
  1. spread peanut butter (sunflower seed butter) onto the side of one apple slice
  1. Top with another apple slice, and gently push down to stick them together
  1. Put sunflower seeds along the peanut butter sticking out between the two apples, to resemble monster teeth

Spider Balls (Energy balls)

 
Ingredients
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup walnuts (or other nut)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • pretzel twists
  • sunflower seeds
 
Directions
  1. Put dates into a food processor and process them until they are smooth
  1. Add rolled oats, walnuts, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt to the food processor
  1. Process until the mixture is smooth, if the mixture is too sticky add more oats
  1. Roll into balls
  1. Break the pretzels apart in order to create curved legs and stick them into the balls
  1. Add two sunflower seeds for the eyes
 

Banana Popsicles

 
Ingredients
  • 4 fresh bananas
  • 1 cup nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbs powdered sugar
  • mini semi-sweet (or dark chocolate) chips
  • 16 popsicle sticks
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter (optional)
 
Directions
  1. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Then peel the 4 bananas and cut them in half. Then slice each half again down the middle, the “long” way, so that you have 4 pieces pieces total. Then insert a popsicle stick into the bottom of each banana slice, and place on the baking sheet
  1. Place the baking sheet into the freeze for at least 30 minutes or overnight
  1. Mix together the yogurt and powdered sugar in a small bowl
  1. Once the bananas are frozen, dip them into the yogurt mixture and then return them to the baking sheet.
  1. Place mini chocolate chips into the bananas for their eyes and then put back into the freezer for at least 1 hour to set the yogurt
  1. (optional) place peanut butter in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds until it is smooth. Then drizzle the peanut butter over the yogurt covered bananas with a spoon. Return to the freezer for about 30 minutes. Enjoy!
