Sports Activities to do With Your Kids
Overview
With winter right around the corner and the weather getting colder, kids will be spending more time inside. The increase in the amount of time spent indoors could cause an increase in screen time and a decrease in the amount of physical activities that your child is getting. So here are a 6 fun activities that you can do with your kids inside this winter season.
Keep the Ball off the Ground
What you need
- Balloon
- Open space
For this indoor activity you are going to be playing keep the ball off the ground using a balloon. The goal of this game is to see how long you can keep the balloon in the air without it touching the ground. You can also incorporate different volleyball skills into the game while you are playing, such as setting or bumping the ball to keep it off the ground.
Indoor Soccer
What you need
- Balloon
- Hallway
This indoor activity allows you to bring soccer inside without worrying about the damage that a soccer ball could cause. This activity should preferably be done in a hallway. Each end of the hallway will act as a goal and you can put down items to further specify the goals. Then you will play a regular game of soccer but using a balloon instead of a soccer ball. You can also practice soccer skills by practicing dribbling, passing, and shooting goals.
Dance Party
What You need
- Music
- Open space
Another fun and easy indoor activity is having a dance party. All you need is music and an open space indoors. Dancing is a great way to not only have fun but it also a great way to get in some exercise and burn some energy.
Yoga
What you need
- Yoga mat or towel
- Open space
This is a great way to stretch your muscles out after a workout, build muscle, and can be a relaxing activity to do before bed. Doing yoga is as simple as laying down a mat and pulling up a Youtube video that walks you through different yoga positions. Here are some great YouTube channels for yoga, Yoga With Adrienne, Yoga By Candace, and Yoga with Kassandra.
Simon Says
What you need
- Open space
This activity is a lot of fun and can get your kids up and moving around. For this activity simply play the game of Simon says while integrating different exercises into the game. For example a prompt could be, “Simon says do 10 jumping jacks”, this will help your kids to get in some exercise while still having fun.
Obstacle Course
What you need
- Open space
- Objects that can be turned into “obstacles”
For this activity find different activities and challenges that your child has to complete in order to finish the obstacle course. Some things that can be used as an obstacle are putting a piece of tape on the floor that they have to walk across like a balance beam, a table can be used for them to crawl under, and tape can be put down to create hop scotch. Obstacles can also consist of different challenges, such as doing jumping jacks, push ups, sit ups, running in place, and practicing ball control with a balloon.
