Overview

Winter is here and so is the holiday season! With the holiday season comes lots of breaks from school and from sports. During this time it is still important for young athletes to get exercise while continuing to grow in skills that will help them do their best in their sport. So here are three activities that your young athlete can do during the winter that helps them to get moving, be outside, and build skills that will help them succeed in their sport.
 

Ice skating

Description
Ice skating is a classic winter activity and is not only fun for young athletes but also for the whole family. Ice skating can be done inside or outside, either location still allows for you to move your body and get exercise. Some of the benefits of ice skating that can be applied to a young athletes sport are balance, agility, coordination, and cardiovascular health. Ice skating improves balance by strengthening the abdominal and lower-back muscles which are used to hep stay upright while ice skating. It improves coordination and agility because it requires both your upper body and lower body to be in sync. Lastly, it helps improve cardiovascular health by being an aerobic exercise that increases the heart rate and helps to strengthen the heart.
 

Cross Country Skiing

Description
Cross country skiing is similar to normal skiing except it is done over a flat area opposed to going down a hill/mountain. This makes this a fun activity that can be done almost anywhere and just requires snow, skis, and ski poles. Cross country skiing is a great way to have a low impact effective workout. Some of the benefits of cross country skiing that can be useful for other sports is it increases balance, helps improve visual acuity, and uses a large amount of your muscle mass. It helps to increase balance through the stride and the shifting of weight that occurs during cross country skiing. It also helps to improve your visual acuity because you have to be able to see changes in terrain in bright and hard to see conditions caused by the snow. Lastly, it uses a large amount of muscle mass because it requires you to use your arms, legs, core, and back.
 

Sledding

Description
Sledding is not only a fun activity for the whole family but also a great way to grow different skills that are important to young athlete’s playing abilities. Sledding is a very simple activity and only requires snow, a sled, and a hill. Sledding has a multitude of benefits such as, increases endurance, increases cardiovascular fitness, and helps with core stability. Sledding helps to increase endurance because it requires walking up moderately steep hills repeatedly. It also helps to increase cardiovascular fitness because it is an activity that increases your heart rate. Lastly, it helps to build core stability because it requires balancing on the sled while going down the hill.
