Overview

With the start of the new year many people focus on creating resolutions for themselves to do in the new year. These usually include plans of being more active, having less screen time, or working towards improving some aspect of themselves. Making New Year’s resolutions is something that everyone can do, including athletes. These resolutions can be focused on growing in a specific area of their lives or their sports. In today’s blog post we will be looking at how to create a good New Year’s resolution and give 3 examples of New Year’s resolutions for athletes.

How to create a good New Year’s resolution?

So what makes a good New Year’s resolution and how do you make one? A New Year’s resolution should be a large goal but should also still be attainable. Something to keep in mind when creating a resolution is to make it a SMART goal. A SMART goal is an acronym for a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time based. Below we will dive deeper into what each one means.

Specific

A goal that is specific is a goal that can be clearly defined. To be specific a goal should answer questions like: What are you going to accomplish and what steps are going to be taken to accomplish the goal?

Measurable

A good goal should have measurable benchmarks that can track your progress towards accomplishing your goal. A measurement should be able to show progress towards achieving your goal.

Achievable

Every goal should be able to be realistically accomplished. This ensures that the goal is realistic and will be able to be accomplished within a reasonable amount of time.

Relevant

This is the step to figure out why you want to achieve your goal. How does the goal that you set relate to the big picture of what you want to achieve and who you are?

Time based

Every good goal should be based on some sort of time measurement. This should include a clear end date for when the goal should be achieved. And should also include time based benchmarks that help you to work towards your goal.

Examples of New Years Resolutions for Athletes

  1. I will be open to risks. If you find yourself shying away from risks and staying within your comfort zone, this could be a good resolution for you to be able to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. This could be within your sport or trying a new sport or activity.
  1. I will work on my sportsmanship. This is a good goal to grow in respect for not only your teammates but also for your coaches, referees, parents, and the players on opposing teams. You can grow in your sportsmanship through not arguing with officials, being respectful to the opposing team, and not breaking the rules.
  1. I will be as prepared as possible for competitions. This is a good resolution to help you to focus on being prepared for competitions weather that is during your season or during your off season. Making sure that you are prepared for competitions will help you to perform at your highest level. Being prepared for a competition can include participating in training and recovery the week leading up to a competition. And on the day of the competition it can look like having a healthy breakfast, having a good warm up, and reviewing your game plan.
