Overview

The end of January is coming quickly and with that a lot of people start to abandon their New Year’s resolution. This can be due to the fact that a plan has not been put in place to achieve the goal, the goal is too ambitious, or you aren’t ready to make that big of a change. So, here are 4 helpful tips to keep your New Year’s resolutions throughout the year.

Have an accountability partner

Having someone who will hold you accountable to achieve your goals will make it easier to not only stick to them but also accomplish them. This can look like a friend who signs up to race in a half marathon with you or a family member that is making sure that you are achieving your fitness goals.

Plan how you will achieve your goal

Another way to stick to your New Year’s resolutions is to create a plan at the beginning of the year. This should be a specific plan that outlines all the steps that need to be taken and when to be able to achieve your goal. This could look like running a mile every day for two weeks and then two miles every week for two weeks to help get better at running long distances.

Start small

To achieve a big goal you have to work at it through making small progress towards it everyday. It’s important to not take on too much at the beginning or else it could potentially cause you to loose motivation later in the year. For example, if you wanted to run a mile without stopping you could start with running .25 miles everyday to help build up to running a mile.

Remind yourself why you are doing it

The motivation to achieve your goal is going to be highest right after you make your goal and when you first start working towards it. But it is important when you start a goal to understand why you want to achieve it. This will be helpful later on when you loose motivation to continue to be able to remind yourself why you want to achieve the goal that you set.

Continue to work towards your goals

Lastly, the most obvious thing that you can do to achieve your goals is to continue to work towards the goals that you made at the beginning of the year. Achieving a resolution takes time, patients, and work. But the satisfaction that comes from pushing yourself and achieving your goals is worth the work that it takes to get there.
